Made for HaxeJam 2024: Summer Jam

Made With the Heaps game engine

i would first like to say that heaps is a very interesting engine
it can be described as flexible yet unorthodox
its like you get a house but you only get the frame, and you're supposed to build the rest yourself
i love this engine and would definitely use for it for a couple more games/projects.

now as for the game itself i decided to attempt a recreation of the gameplay in bookworm adventures, a childhood classic.
i had trouble getting the gameplay down, because despite how simple it looked, i know for a fact bookworm adventures rigs the letter generation to the player's favor, something i couldn't manage to implement in time

as for the visuals
i wanted to break away from pixel art for a game
then i remembered why:
i'm, diagnosed with ADHD and dysgraphia, and in testing for genetic tourette, a deadly combination that basically means i physically can't hold my hand straight, and the only way for me to get anywhere close to a straight line is by either going very fast. or going very slowly, both lack accuracy.
so this was fun experience for me to remind myself why i do pixel art.

all graphics in the game were drawn by hand by me in krita with a wacom drawing tablet

I have a much milder version of what you are describing did a great job with the pixel art!

Game is really well polished as well. How are the letters selected? Is there some bias towards certain types of letters like vowels etc?

(1 edit)

letter generation is just:
Random.string(1,"aaaaabbbcddeeeeefgghiiiiklllmmnnnooopprrrssstttuuvwxyz");

i removed letters that are very difficult to get words with like Q and J,
and basically did weighted letter selection, this in theory makes some letters more common than others.

I really like the graphic style, especially of the wizard -- I think you are underselling your ability for art!
